'Disk Clean-up' (for Window's XP)

During the course of normal use, Microsoft Windows creates a fair amount of temporary files it uses for computer operations. Additionally, when you surf the Internet your Internet browser stores temporary files on your hard drive know as Internet cache. Your computer is supposed to remove these files after a period of time but it doesn't always do a good job cleaning up after itself.

"Starting with Windows XP, Microsoft included a little utility called "Disk Cleanup" to help manage and remove these files. You should run this program about once a month or before you defragment your drive. (For those with XP or above, its easier than manually deleting the Internet cache and empting the recycle bin - for those using an older version of Windows [before XP], click here to find out how to delete your Internet cache and Temporary files).

To start Disk Cleanup click on, Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup;

Now you should see this. Click OK;

Next you should see this. This may take several minutes to complete:

When it finishes calculating space this window will open;

Check the boxes like the ones above (if they're not already checked), then scroll down by clicking the scroll bar. Click the bottom three boxes as shown below, if they're not already checked. (Do not check the Office Set-Up Files.) Now click the OK button;

You will get this dialog box confirming the action. Click Yes and it will start the clean up;

The next window (below) will show you its current status. This may take several minutes;

When the cleanup is finished the status window above will automatically close. Your Done!
